Rabies is a rare but extremely serious viral infection that is almost always fatal once symptoms appear. It is transmitted through the bite, scratch, or lick of an infected animal - most commonly dogs, bats, and monkeys in high-risk regions. Fortunately, rabies is entirely preventable with timely vaccination.

At Solent Pharmacy in Shirley, Southampton, we offer reliable pre-exposure rabies vaccinations for travellers at risk.

What is Rabies?

Rabies is caused by a virus that attacks the central nervous system. Once symptoms develop, the disease is almost always fatal, which is why prevention is critical. While rabies is rare in the UK, it is still common in many parts of the world, especially in rural or developing areas where animal vaccination is not widespread. Travellers taking part in outdoor activities, visiting remote regions, or working with animals are particularly at risk and are strongly advised to get vaccinated.

Symptoms of Rabies

Symptoms typically appear between 1 to 3 months after exposure, but can sometimes develop sooner. Early signs may be mild but progress rapidly:

  • - Fever and headache
  • - Tingling or burning at the wound site
  • - Anxiety, agitation, or confusion
  • - Difficulty swallowing or breathing
  • - Hydrophobia (fear of water)
  • - Muscle spasms and eventual paralysis

Once symptoms begin, rabies is almost always fatal - which makes preventive vaccination essential.

High-Risk Areas for Rabies

Rabies is still widespread in parts of:

  • - Asia (including India, Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia)
  • - Africa
  • - Central and South America

You are especially at risk if you’re staying in rural areas, trekking, volunteering, or working with animals abroad.
