Antimalarial Medication in Southampton
Travelling to a region where malaria is present requires proper precautions to protect your health. At Solent Pharmacy in Shirley, Southampton, we offer a selection of clinically proven antimalarial medications to suit different travel needs. Our pharmacist will guide you in choosing the most appropriate option based on your destination, medical history, and personal preferences.
We currently provide the following antimalarial options:
1. Doxycycline
How it works:
Doxycycline is an antibiotic that helps prevent malaria by stopping the malaria parasite from multiplying in the bloodstream. It targets the asexual blood stage of Plasmodium species.
How to take it:
- Begin 1–2 days before entering a malaria-affected area.
- Take once daily, ideally with food and water to minimise stomach discomfort.
- Continue daily during your stay and for 4 weeks after leaving the area.
- Take at the same time each day for best results.
Common side effects:
- Nausea or upset stomach
- Increased sensitivity to sunlight (photosensitivity) – use sun protection
- Diarrhoea
- Oral or vaginal thrush (due to changes in natural bacterial balance)
Starting price: £10 per pack
2. Mefloquine (Lariam)
How it works:
Mefloquine prevents malaria by disrupting the parasite’s ability to reproduce in red blood cells. Its long half-life allows for once-weekly dosing.
How to take it:
- Start at least 1 week before travel — ideally 2–3 weeks prior to monitor for side effects.
- Take once a week, on the same day each week.
- Continue weekly during your trip and for 4 weeks after leaving the area.
Common side effects:
- Vivid dreams or disturbed sleep
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Rarely, mood changes, anxiety or depression – not suitable for those with a history of mental health concerns
Starting price: £32.50 per pack
3. Malarone (Atovaquone/Proguanil)
How it works:
Malarone combines two antimalarial agents that work together: Atovaquone disrupts energy production in the parasite, while Proguanil prevents DNA replication. It is widely considered the most well-tolerated option.
How to take it:
- Begin 1–2 days before travel.
- Take once daily with food or a milky drink to aid absorption.
- Continue daily throughout your trip and for 7 days after leaving the area.
Common side effects:
- Mild stomach upset (nausea, abdominal discomfort)
- Headache
- Mouth ulcers (less common)
- Generally very well tolerated with fewer side effects than alternatives
Starting price: £50 per pack
